What does it take to add a return to a 1950s ranch?
Usually a hallway or bedroom wall cut, a new duct to the furnace, and a few hours. It’s one of the cheapest comfort fixes there is.
Can you add AC to a house that never had it?
Yes. A coil on the existing furnace and a condenser outside, usually in a day. A cold-climate heat pump does the same job and heats most of the winter too.
Our 1950s ranch has one return vent. Is that a problem?
Often. A single undersized return starves the furnace and makes some rooms stuffy. Adding a return is a modest job with a big payoff.
