What it usually is

The causes, most common first.

Frozen evaporator coil

Low airflow or low refrigerant freezes the indoor coil into a block of ice. Turn the system OFF so it can thaw.

Failed capacitor

The outdoor fan or compressor hums but won’t start. Heat kills capacitors. Cheap and fast.

The system slowly loses charge. Topping it off without fixing the leak is a waste of your money.

Dirty condenser coil

Cottonwood fluff and dust block the outdoor coil so it can’t shed heat. A cleaning restores capacity.

Set the thermostat to COOL, 5° below room temperature.

Check the breaker for the outdoor unit. It often has its own.

Look at the copper lines at the outdoor unit. Ice means turn the system OFF and let it thaw for two hours.

No. If the coil is frozen or the compressor is straining, running it turns a small repair into a big one. Turn it off and call.
